DC Family Series

DEAR DAD

This film is the dad version of the DC self-produced family series. We hope that through different perspectives, the communication of different age groups can be improved in order to understand family emotions and ties. Our goal is to use the film to awaken forgotten memories and emotions.

Idea

In the initial planning stages, the director contrasted a dialogue between father and daughter and emphasized how after time, the love of our parents will never change. However, as children grow up, modern life will constrict their connection with parents. We wanted to emphasize that these emotions are present in both hearts, but perhaps because of the imbalance of information, their ways of expressing emotions are not the same. We wanted to remind people: “Parents always remember the faces of their children in every stage, but we forget when our parent’s faces became covered with wrinkles. Maybe you do not always remember what happened during those times, but you must remember that they love you very much. “

Process

The film’s casting process was very interesting, we began by using child actors, but when they worked with parents who were actors, it felt unnatural. When this happened, we did not hesitate to delay shooting in order to find more suitable pairings. Finally, DC found a father and daughter who were very close. The actress that played the daughter after she had grown up had many similarities with the young girl, including their appearance, which was a very lucky coincidence.

For the picture design, although the film was not very long, we had 4-5 different backdrops, to represent the different scenes in life. The director wanted to convey a happy childhood, but a distant and alienated relationship after the children grow up. When the father was busy at work, it compared to the little girl also “working” at home. After some tense conversations, we see the daughter still feels warmly towards her father and uses her own way to show concern. The image then transforms to a grown up and elderly character and how a shared laugh allows them to rekindle their close relationship.

Result

People can understand what stories are trying to convey, even if they do not express emotions directly. The emotions can be expressed by suitable methods in different occasions. We rearrange the pictures and dialogues to produce more memorable results.
